Additional information

The 1809 pattern series from the Rio de Janeiro mint came directly out of the administrative scramble following the Portuguese royal family's flight to Brazil in 1808 — the first time a European monarch had governed from the Americas. The Casa da Moeda do Rio de Janeiro needed to establish credible coinage rapidly, and several competing designs were struck as patterns before the circulating types were settled. Gomes E2.01 places this among the earliest documented essays from that newly activated mint.

Fewer than a handful of examples are recorded across major collections.
