Obverse description Draped bust of King João V facing right, rendered in high relief with flowing, elaborately curled hair characteristic of the Baroque portrait style. The effigy occupies the central field, with the mintmark 'R' (Rio de Janeiro) positioned immediately below the truncation and the date '1727' in the lower exergual area. The surrounding legend reads IOANNES V D G PORT ET ALG REX, denoting the king's titles as sovereign of Portugal and the Algarves. The portrait displays fine engraving detail in the hair and drapery, consistent with early 18th-century Portuguese colonial coinage.
