The mint mark 'Mo' and assayer initials 'MF' appear to the left of the shield, with the denomination numeral '8' to the right, flanked by small rosette ornaments. The encircling Latin legend reads PHILIP·V·D·G·HISPAN·ET IND·REX, identifying Felipe V as King of Spain and the Indies by the grace of God. The design is executed in the fully milled 'columnario' predecessor style with a toothed border running along the entire periphery. Between the pillars stands a crowned globus cruciger depicting two hemispheres, symbolising Spain's dominion over the Old and New Worlds. The mint mark 'Mo' appears to the lower left of the composition, with the date '1741' inscribed in the exergue below the waves. The encircling Latin legend VTRAQUE VNUM PLUS VLTR, meaning 'Both as One, Further Beyond,' completes the design, with a toothed milled border running the full circumference. |
