| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the quartered royal arms of Spain — depicting castles of Castile and lions of León in alternating quarters, with the Bourbon fleur-de-lis escutcheon at centre — surmounted by an elaborate arched royal crown. The mint mark 'Mo' and assayer initials 'MF' appear to the left of the shield, with the denomination numeral '8' to the right, flanked by small rosette ornaments. The encircling Latin legend reads PHILIP·V·D·G·HISPAN·ET IND·REX, identifying Felipe V as King of Spain and the Indies by the grace of God. The design is executed in the fully milled 'columnario' predecessor style with a toothed border running along the entire periphery. The coin's surfaces display the characteristic sharp mechanical strike of the early milled coinage introduced at the Mexico City Mint from 1732. |
