Freiberg's notgeld program was one of the more coherent municipal efforts in Saxony — the city leaned heavily on its identity as a centuries-old silver mining center, and the local printer Ernst Lange handled the entire run in-house rather than farming it out to the larger specialist printers in Leipzig or Dresden who dominated much of the regional notgeld trade.
