Maria I and Pedro III reigned jointly after the death of José I in 1777 — Pedro being Maria's uncle as well as her husband, a dynastic arrangement that was unremarkable by Braganza standards. When Pedro died in 1786, Maria continued to reign alone, which is why this type spans nearly a decade under a dual portrait authority that effectively ended mid-series. The joint coinage was accordingly struck across several die varieties, hence the multiple Gomes references for a single denomination.
Maria later suffered a severe mental breakdown, widely attributed to grief compounded by the Lisbon earthquake's long shadow on her religious conscience, and regency passed to her son in 1799.
