Obverse description The crowned royal arms of Portugal occupy the central field, displaying the traditional quartered escutcheon with the five quinas (blue shields bearing five white bezants in saltire) arranged in a cross pattern, encircled by the bordure of castles. The shield is surmounted by an ornate royal crown. A peripheral legend in Latin encircles the design, separated from the toothed border by a beaded inner rim, with small quatrefoil ornaments punctuating the field on either side of the arms.
