James I's Irish silver coinage of 1604–1607 was debased relative to English sterling as a matter of deliberate policy — the crown routinely treated Irish coinage as a revenue instrument, issuing it at a fineness below the English standard to extract seigniorage from the Irish economy. The Second Coinage was struck at 6 oz fine (half the English sterling standard of 11 oz 2 dwt), meaning the face value of each piece substantially exceeded its bullion content.
Three KM varieties reflect documented differences in the harp design and lettering across the issue's production run at the Tower of London, where Irish coins were minted under indenture rather than at Dublin.
