Aachen's municipal and district authority issued this 5000 Mark note in 1923 as Notgeld — emergency money printed locally because the Reichsbank simply could not supply currency fast enough to keep pace with hyperinflation. By mid-1923, denominations that had seemed absurd six months earlier were already obsolete within weeks of printing. The Aachener Verlags- und Druck-Gesellschaft was a local publishing and printing firm, not a specialist banknote printer, which was entirely normal for Notgeld production at this stage of the crisis.
Aachen's proximity to the Belgian and Dutch borders gave the region a particular edge during this period — cross-border hard currency transactions were a practical reality here that they were not in the German interior.
