The denomination legend "GUTSCHEIN ÜBER FÜNFTAUSEND" appears at the top in bold letterpress, with the numeral "5000" flanking a central boxed "MARK" inscription across the middle register. A text block in the lower centre states the authorization by the Reichsfinanzministerium and the Prussian trade minister, below which a serial number in red and a three-line validity clause are printed. The date "SIEGBURG / 10. JULI 1923" and the title "DER BÜRGERMEISTER" with a manuscript signature appear at the foot, while the circular city seal of Siegburg with an eagle and lion device is impressed at the lower right. |

Siegburg's 1923 notgeld issue is part of the massive wave of municipal emergency money printed during the hyperinflationary collapse of the Weimar Republic — by mid-1923, German municipalities were effectively running their own currency operations simply to keep wages paid. The 5000 Mark denomination, almost laughably inadequate by late 1923, reflects the frantic pace at which new notes had to be designed, contracted, and distributed.
B. Kühlen was a Mönchengladbach commercial printer, not a specialist security printer — a telling detail about how far the Reichsbank's monopoly on currency production had broken down by this point.
