Anagarika Dharmapala remains one of the most consequential figures in modern Buddhist history — a Sinhalese activist who, in 1891, co-founded the Maha Bodhi Society with the explicit goal of returning the Bodh Gaya temple complex in India to Buddhist control after centuries under Hindu administration. He died in 1933, having taken full monastic ordination only months before his death, and was posthumously given the title "Srimath" by the Sri Lankan government. This 2014 issue marks the 150th anniversary of his birth.
