Obverse description The national coat of arms of Benin occupies the central field, featuring a quartered shield supported by two leopards rampant, surmounted by a buffalo head above, and a scroll bearing the national motto FRATERNITE JUSTICE TRAVAIL below the shield. The country name REPUBLIQUE DU BENIN is inscribed in a circular legend around the upper periphery in Latin characters. The denomination 500 FRANCS CFA appears in bold relief at the lower portion of the field beneath the arms.

Reverse description The reverse depicts the airship LZ 1 in flight over a mountainous landscape, rendered with colored accents against the polished field. A circular medallion portrait of Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin, shown in right-facing profile, is superimposed on the design. The legend FERDINAND GRAF VON ZEPPELIN arcs along the upper periphery, while the airship designation LZ 10 and the commemorative dates 1917-1997 appear in the lower field, marking the eightieth anniversary of Zeppelin's death.
