Saint-Gobain's German subsidiary at Stolberg — a glassworks and chemical operation with French roots stretching back to Louis XIV's mirror monopoly — was among the thousands of industrial firms forced to print their own emergency currency during the hyperinflation of 1923. The Reichsbank simply could not supply enough notes to meet payroll obligations as the mark collapsed weekly, then daily.
The Stolberg branch's notgeld is relatively obscure compared to municipal issues, and the Merkelbach reference for industrial notgeld remains the primary finding tool for this issuer. The watermarked paper distinguishes it from the cheapest emergency printings of the period.
