The text is set in Gothic blackletter script, with the denomination 'Fünfhunderttausend Mark' occupying the central field in large display type below the issuing authority legend 'Gutschein der Stadt Barmen'; a faint oval watermark-style vignette of the Barmen city arms appears as an underprint behind the denomination. To the right, a decorative cartouche encloses the numeral '500,000' above the word 'Mark' in Gothic lettering, and a red circular official stamp of the Oberbürgermeisteramt Barmen is applied within an ornamental frame; the issue date 'den 4.
