Vorderseitenbeschreibung Printed in dark green on a pale guilloche underprint, the note is framed by an ornate border of repeating rosette and lozenge motifs. The text is set in Gothic blackletter script, with the denomination 'Fünfhunderttausend Mark' occupying the central field in large display type below the issuing authority legend 'Gutschein der Stadt Barmen'; a faint oval watermark-style vignette of the Barmen city arms appears as an underprint behind the denomination. To the right, a decorative cartouche encloses the numeral '500,000' above the word 'Mark' in Gothic lettering, and a red circular official stamp of the Oberbürgermeisteramt Barmen is applied within an ornamental frame; the issue date 'den 4. August 1923' and the facsimile signature of the Oberbürgermeister appear in the lower centre.

Rückseitenbeschreibung Printed in grey-green on a fine guilloche ground, the reverse centres on a large oval vignette engraved in fine letterpress showing the neoclassical façade of the Barmen Rathaus (town hall), with columned portico, statuary along the roofline, and figures on the forecourt steps. Flanking the central vignette to the left and right are two matching decorative cartouches in Gothic blackletter inscribed 'Stadt Barmen 500000 Mark'. The entire composition is enclosed within a scalloped outer border.

Anmerkungen

Barmen issued this note during the most acute phase of the Weimar hyperinflation — by mid-1923, municipal and private emergency issuers (Notgeld) had become de facto suppliers of functional currency because Reichsbank notes simply could not be printed and distributed fast enough to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. A 500,000 Mark denomination, unthinkable two years earlier, was already becoming inadequate within weeks of printing. August Schmittmann was a local commercial printer, not a specialist banknote house, which is typical of late-series Notgeld from this period.

Barmen itself ceased to exist as an independent city in 1929, absorbed into the newly amalgamated Wuppertal.
