This type was struck across the turbulent decade following the 1979 Islamic Revolution, a period during which Iran was simultaneously dismantling the Pahlavi monetary system, fighting a catastrophic eight-year war with Iraq, and operating under severe international sanctions. The oil derrick motif on the reverse was a deliberate ideological statement — petroleum remained the backbone of revolutionary financing even as the new government publicly condemned the Shah's dependence on it.
Aluminium bronze was chosen partly out of necessity; sanctions disrupted access to the nickel alloys used in earlier Iranian coinage.
