Allstedt's claim to these two Heinrichs is legitimate: Heinrich II held court there repeatedly, and the town's imperial palace — the Pfalz Allstedt — was where Heinrich III was born in 1017. The choice of subject for a municipal notgeld series wasn't mere local pride; it was a deliberate assertion of historical weight by a small Thuringian town that genuinely had the medieval credentials to back it up.
A. Herrach in Bürgel printed the bulk of Thuringian notgeld during the early 1920s inflation period and brought consistent lithographic quality to the millennial series. The five-note set was designed for collectors as much as for circulation.
