Obverse description Two armoured knights in half-figure flank the central vignette, each holding a lance and standing behind a heraldic shield — the left bearing a chequered coat of arms, the right bearing a lion rampant with a floral base. The large numeral '50' occupies a bold black cartouche at centre, below which the denomination 'Pfennig' and the issuing authority 'Notgeld der Stadt Schalkau/Thür.' are inscribed in Gothic letterpress. The lower border carries the validity date and the serial number alongside the issuing office designation 'Bürgermeisteramt', all printed in black and violet on cream paper.

Reverse description The entire reverse is occupied by a woodcut-style historical vignette rendered in black and violet, portraying armoured knights engaged in close combat with swords and lances before a mound of cannonballs, with a turreted castle visible in the background amid dramatic clouds. The scene alludes to the medieval conflict between Schalkau and the Counts of Henneberg. Vertical columns of Gothic script border the vignette on both left and right sides, carrying the historical verse relating to the episode, with the series number '4' visible at lower left within the composition.
