| Opmerkingen |
Naunhof is a small Saxon town southeast of Leipzig, and in 1921 its local Red Cross voluntary ambulance corps — the Freiwillige Sanitätskolonne — was among hundreds of civic organizations across Germany that issued emergency small-change notes to fill the coin vacuum left by postwar metal shortages. The Notgeld boom of 1921 was partly practical, partly a cottage industry: many towns printed attractive pieces knowing collectors would absorb them without ever spending them, generating revenue for the issuer at no real cost.
Whether this Naunhof piece was issued primarily for circulation or collector sale is the right question. The Red Cross affiliation suggests genuine local utility, but the reference suffix "2S" typically indicates a series variant — collector-targeted runs often appear in multiple numbered editions like this.
