The central vignette, signed by the artist Schmelzle-Lehmann, illustrates a dramatic scene from the Cologne legend of the Heinzelmännchen — a tumbling mass of fantastical dwarves spilling chaotically down a staircase bathed in orange light, with a cherub-like figure observing from above.
