Erfurt's municipal 50 Pfennig notgeld from 1921 sits in the tail end of Germany's first wave of inflation-driven emergency coinage — by this point, hundreds of German cities were printing their own fractional currency to plug the gap left by a chronic shortage of small-denomination Reichsmünzen.
