Erfurt's municipal 50 Pfennig notgeld from 1921 sits in the tail end of Germany's first wave of inflation-driven emergency coinage — by this point, hundreds of German cities were printing their own fractional currency to plug the gap left by a chronic shortage of small-denomination Reichsmünzen. What distinguishes the Erfurt civic issues is the split printing arrangement: Alfred Hanf handled one portion of the run while Otto Richters & Co. handled another, both operating locally, which accounts for subtle typographical differences collectors use to distinguish the varieties catalogued under this reference.
