The denomination 'Fünfzig Pfennig' is set in bold blackletter script across the upper field, with a central oval text panel giving the issuer's redemption pledge, dated 1 July 1921 and valid to 30 September 1922. Schmalkalden was an enclave of Prussian territory completely surrounded by Thuringia — an administrative quirk that survived until 1945 — and the Kreisausschuss (district committee) issuing this Notgeld in 1921 was acting under that unusual jurisdictional arrangement. Feodor Wilisch was a local Schmalkalden printer, and Kurt Jäckel's involvement as designer places this firmly in the tradition of artistically ambitious Kleingeldersatz that Thuringian and Hessian municipalities pursued well into the hyperinflationary period.
