| Obverse description | Warm ochre and brown letterpress Notgeld note with an ornate Art Nouveau border composed of interlocking geometric and foliate motifs, flanked by two symmetrical decorative cartouches with diamond-shaped insets. The denomination 'Fünfzig Pfennig' is set in bold blackletter script across the upper field, with a central oval text panel giving the issuer's redemption pledge, dated 1 July 1921 and valid to 30 September 1922. The serial number appears at lower left, with the issuing authority 'Kreisausschuß / Der Vorsitzende' and a manuscript signature at lower right, and the printer's imprint at the foot. |

Schmalkalden was an enclave of Prussian territory completely surrounded by Thuringia — an administrative quirk that survived until 1945 — and the Kreisausschuss (district committee) issuing this Notgeld in 1921 was acting under that unusual jurisdictional arrangement. Feodor Wilisch was a local Schmalkalden printer, and Kurt Jäckel's involvement as designer places this firmly in the tradition of artistically ambitious Kleingeldersatz that Thuringian and Hessian municipalities pursued well into the hyperinflationary period.
The DeNG reference suffix ".2-2/6" indicates this is one of a numbered series, suggesting the district issued multiple denominations or design variants under the same authorization.
