Łódź's textile manufacturing base made it one of the most economically significant cities in Russian-controlled Poland, and its occupation by German forces in December 1914 immediately strangled normal commerce. This 50 Kopiejek note was issued jointly by the Council of Elders of the Łódź Merchants' Guild and the Łódź Exchange Committee — a rare instance of two distinct commercial bodies co-issuing emergency scrip, reflecting the city's unusual structure as a trade hub with organized institutional infrastructure even under occupation.
The kopiejek denomination deliberately retained Russian monetary framing, the ruble system still being the reference currency in circulation at that moment.
