Schrems is a small market town in the Waldviertel district of Lower Austria, and this note is a product of the severe coinage shortage that followed Austria's defeat in the First World War. The new republican government could not supply enough small-denomination coin to meet everyday transactional needs, and hundreds of Austrian municipalities — Schrems among them — printed their own Notgeld to fill the gap. F. Berger in Horn was a regional printer that handled commissions for several Waldviertel communities during this period.
The Jaksch/Pick suffix "IIa" indicates a specific paper or color variant within the 50 Heller issue, worth distinguishing from the other states of this type.
