Ried im Traunkreis issued this 50 Heller note as part of Austria's Notgeld wave — the emergency municipal currency phenomenon that swept the country between 1919 and 1921 when the postwar coinage shortage made small-denomination transactions nearly impossible. Hundreds of Austrian Gemeinden printed their own stopgap paper, and quality ranged enormously depending on what the local printer could manage.
The Jaksc catalog reference JPR0836Ia distinguishes this specific printing variant from later or parallel issues in the same series. Collectors should verify the suffix carefully — minor differences in text setting or color separated what were otherwise near-identical notes from the same municipality.
