Gaspoltshofen is a small market town in Upper Austria, and this 50 Heller note is one of thousands of Austrian Notgeld issues produced in the immediate postwar years when small coin disappeared from circulation entirely — hoarded, melted, or simply not minted in sufficient quantity during the economic collapse following 1918. Municipalities, businesses, and even individual estates printed their own fractional paper to keep local commerce moving.
The Jaksch/Pick reference suffix "b" indicates a variant within the Gaspoltshofen 50 Heller type — likely a signature, paper, or overprint difference from the "a" issue. Hans Bachinger's signature as issuing authority points to a local municipal official rather than any banking institution.
