Gaspoltshofen is a small market town in Upper Austria, and this 50 Heller note is one of thousands of Austrian Notgeld issues produced in the immediate postwar years when small coin disappeared from circulation entirely — hoarded, melted, or simply not minted in sufficient quantity during the economic collapse following 1918. Municipalities, businesses, and even individual estates printed their own fractional paper to keep local commerce moving.
