Erlauf is a small market town on the Danube in Lower Austria, and this 50 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities after the collapse of the Habsburg economy left small change effectively nonexistent. The Sommer printing house in nearby St. Pölten handled a number of these local emergency issues during this period, giving the region's Notgeld a degree of production consistency unusual among comparable village-level pieces.
Three signatories rather than the more common two suggests a full municipal council validation — mayor, deputy, and treasurer, or some equivalent local authority structure — though the precise offices held by Weiner, Teufl, and Fendt are unrecorded in standard references.
