Pürstling is a tiny rural commune in the Hausruckviertel district of Upper Austria, and this 50 Heller notgeld is about as local as emergency currency gets. The Ortsgemeinde series from this region was issued to address the acute coin shortage that persisted well into the early 1920s following Austria's postwar economic collapse — small-denomination metal coinage had effectively vanished from circulation, hoarded or melted, and thousands of Austrian parishes and municipalities stepped in to fill the gap.
Johann Wagner signed as Ortsvorsteher — village headman, not a bank official. The authority backing this note was, in practice, the word of a local administrator in a community small enough that everyone knew who that was.
