In October 2015, a Metrojet Airbus A321 broke apart over the Sinai Peninsula shortly after departing Sharm el-Sheikh, killing all 224 passengers and crew — the deadliest aviation disaster in Russian history. A bomb planted by an Islamic State affiliate brought the aircraft down at cruising altitude.
