| Obverse description | The brass centre features the national coat of arms of Burkina Faso, depicting two rampant white stallions flanking a central shield charged with a five-pointed star, supported by an open book below and surmounted by a scroll inscribed BURKINA FASO. Below the shield, a ribbon bears the national motto in three segments: Unité, Progrès, Justice. The copper-nickel outer ring carries the legend REPUBLIQUE DU BURKINA FASO arcing across the upper field, with the denomination 50 FRANCS CFA inscribed along the lower arc. |

The Andrea Doria was an Italian ocean liner that sank in July 1956 after colliding with the MS Stockholm off Nantucket — one of the most documented maritime disasters of the postwar period, partly because enough passengers survived to tell it and because the wreck remains diveable today. Burkina Faso, a landlocked country with no coastline and no historical connection to Italian maritime history, issues these CFA-denomination pieces almost exclusively for the collector export market through licensed distributors.
