This issue belongs to Spain's long-running series honoring Picasso's work, timed to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of the artist's death in April 1973. Arlequín con Espejo, painted in 1923, belongs to Picasso's Neoclassical period — a deliberate turn toward order and figuration after the fracturing logic of Cubism, influenced in part by his work designing sets and costumes for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. The harlequin figure recurs obsessively throughout his career, first appearing during the Rose Period and carrying unmistakable autobiographical weight.
