| Beschrijving voorzijde | The fourth definitive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, as modelled by Ian Rank-Broadley, is depicted in right-facing profile, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the upper left periphery, with AUSTRALIA 2010 continuing along the right and lower right rim. The engraver's initials IRB appear in small letters below the truncation of the neck. The portrait is rendered with fine detail in the hair and crown, characteristic of Rank-Broadley's mature style. |

The 2010 issue marked the 150th running of the Melbourne Cup, first held in 1861 over two miles at Flemington Racecourse with a field of seventeen horses. That inaugural race was won by Archer, a horse who had reportedly walked from Nowra, New South Wales — some 500 miles — to compete. The Royal Australian Mint has produced commemorative fifty-cent pieces for major Australian events since the decimal era began in 1966, copper-nickel being the standard circulating alloy for the dodecagonal denomination throughout this period.
