The 2010 issue marked the 150th running of the Melbourne Cup, first held in 1861 over two miles at Flemington Racecourse with a field of seventeen horses. That inaugural race was won by Archer, a horse who had reportedly walked from Nowra, New South Wales — some 500 miles — to compete. The Royal Australian Mint has produced commemorative fifty-cent pieces for major Australian events since the decimal era began in 1966, copper-nickel being the standard circulating alloy for the dodecagonal denomination throughout this period.
