Hong Kong's currency remained under Crown authority through this entire period, with the colonial government issuing coinage independently of the Royal Mint's standard Commonwealth output — these were struck at the Royal Mint in London and later Llantrisant. The transition away from the first Gillick portrait came as Hong Kong's economy was accelerating sharply through the 1960s, meaning late-date examples from this series saw genuine heavy circulation in one of the world's most commercially active ports.
