The Supermarine Spitfire entered service with the RAF in 1938, but its defining moment came during the Battle of Britain in the summer of 1940, when production bottlenecks — partly caused by Luftwaffe bombing of the Castle Bromwich factory — threatened to ground the type entirely. Lord Beaverbrook's Ministry of Aircraft Production ran public "Spitfire Funds," allowing towns and institutions to donate toward named aircraft, making it one of the few warplanes with a genuine civilian fundraising mythology attached to it.
