During the Spanish Civil War, the Republican zone experienced a near-total collapse of small-denomination coinage — hoarded, melted, or simply absent. Municipalities, cooperatives, shops, and private businesses across Catalonia filled the gap by issuing their own paper emergency currency, known as *moneda de paper* or *bitllets locals*. Joan Sanromà, a wine and spirits merchant in Valls, issued this 50 centimos note as functional shop scrip, accepted locally in lieu of official change.
Valls, in the Alt Camp comarca, produced numerous such issues from different entities during the war years. The AL catalogue reference places this within the exhaustive Turró/Crusafont documentation of Catalan Civil War emergency issues — a collecting field with thousands of distinct local pieces.
