Reverse description The reverse features a group of three mountain gorillas rendered in high sculptural relief in the lower left field, set against a textured raised map of the African continent occupying the upper and right portions of the design. A small privy mark circle bearing the inscription '15th Anniv.' appears to the left of the gorillas. The legend 'AFRICAN OUNCE' arcs along the left rim, with the dates '2008 - 2023' flanking the apex of the map and '1oz FINE SILVER 999' inscribed along the lower right rim, denoting the coin's bullion specifications and the fifteenth anniversary of the series.

Additional information

Rwanda's central bank has issued a long-running series of mountain gorilla coins since the early 2000s, largely aimed at the collector and bullion crossover market. The "anniversary" designation here marks a milestone within that series rather than any event in Rwandan political or monetary history. Mountain gorillas were reduced to fewer than 300 individuals by the mid-1980s before conservation efforts — complicated significantly by the 1994 genocide, which left Volcanoes National Park effectively unguarded for months — reversed the population decline. Current counts exceed 1,000.
