The Bayerische Notenbank was one of four German state banks still holding the legal right to issue their own banknotes under the Reichsbank Law of 1875 — the others being Baden, Saxony, and Württemberg. That privilege, already an anachronism by the Weimar period, became a genuine operational problem in 1923 when the state banks were forced to keep pace with the Reichsbank's own hyperinflationary emissions. This 50-million Mark note is a product of that scramble, printed locally in Munich as the Reich's central machinery struggled to supply enough paper to meet demand.
Bavaria's political atmosphere in late 1923 was combustible — the Hitler-Ludendorff putsch attempt came in November of that year, weeks after notes at this denomination level were in circulation.
