5 Sokolů T. G. Masaryk

The "5 Sokolů" designation refers to the five Sokol gymnastic movement figures incorporated into the design — the Sokol organization having been a cornerstone of Czech national identity since its founding in 1862, explicitly suppressed under Austrian rule and revived with fierce enthusiasm at independence. Masaryk himself was a patron of the movement.

Struck in the chaotic first years of the new Czechoslovak state, when mint capacity and raw material supply were both severely constrained, this copper piece was among the earliest issues to carry Masaryk's name on circulating coinage.
