Factory scrip issued by a defense enterprise is unusual enough. Factory scrip issued by a post-Soviet aircraft manufacturer — one that built MiG fighters throughout the Cold War — is something else entirely. The Sokol plant in Nizhny Novgorod had been producing military aircraft since the 1930s and by the 2000s was navigating the difficult transition between state-order dependency and commercial survival, including licensed production of the Yak-130 trainer.
Polymer substrate on a local scrip note from 2007 is the genuine curiosity here. Most Russian enterprise tokens and vouchers of this period used paper. The choice of polymer suggests either a specific anti-counterfeiting concern or access to a supplier unusual for an internal payment instrument.
