Obverse description Uncrowned, bare-headed effigy of King Charles III facing left, rendered in high relief in the contemporary portrait by sculptor Martin Jennings. The king is depicted in civilian dress with a simple open collar. The circular legend around the periphery reads CHARLES III·D·G·REX·F·D·5 POUNDS·2024, with the engraver's initials MJ incuse in the lower right field beneath the truncation. The mirrored proof fields provide sharp contrast against the finely detailed portrait.

Reverse description Full-length figure of Maid Marian, the legendary noblewoman of the Robin Hood cycle, depicted in three-quarter view facing right and set amid a richly detailed forest environment of oak leaves, ivy, ferns, and entwined branches. She wears a medieval gown and braided hair ornament, carries a quiver of arrows on her back, and reaches gracefully toward an ivy-clad bough with her right hand. The composition, designed by Frank Kelly, fills the entire field with naturalistic foliage rendered in fine relief. The arc legend MAID MARIAN · MYTHS AND LEGENDS · reads around the upper periphery, with the date 2024 along the lower right, and the engraver's initials FK appear in the lower central field.

Additional information

Maid Marian's appearance on a British crown-sized piece is less whimsical than it looks. The Robin Hood legend, though rooted in medieval ballads, was systematically promoted as a distinctly English folk mythology during the 19th century — Marian's role elevated largely through stage adaptations rather than early source texts, where she is often absent entirely. This coin belongs to a Royal Mint series revisiting British folklore, issued under the new reign partly as a way of distinguishing Charles III's commemorative program from his mother's decades-long run of similar formats.

The KM# 1993 assignment places it early in the Charles III numbering sequence, consistent with the flood of proof issues the Mint launched in 2023–24.
