Maid Marian's appearance on a British crown-sized piece is less whimsical than it looks. The Robin Hood legend, though rooted in medieval ballads, was systematically promoted as a distinctly English folk mythology during the 19th century — Marian's role elevated largely through stage adaptations rather than early source texts, where she is often absent entirely.
