Obverse description Central vignette at lower left shows a harbour scene with sailing vessels and steamships; floral sprays occupy the lower centre. The denomination CINQ PIASTRES is set in large bold letterpress across the upper half, flanked by elaborate dragon-head ornamental borders at left and right, with a guilloche rosette medallion to the far right. The date and place of issue appear in manuscript below the central text, with two signature lines below designated Un Administrateur and L'Administrateur-Directeur, and the engraver's credit GEORGES DUVAL fec. and L. RUFFE SC. at bottom.
Obverse lettering BANQUE DE L'INDO-CHINE CINQ PIASTRES PAYABLES EN ESPÈCES AU PORTEUR HAIPHONG GEORGES DUVAL fec. L.RUFFE SC.
Reverse description The reverse is dominated by a large sinuous dragon coiling from left to centre in intaglio print, rendered in fine line engraving. Chinese characters are distributed across the central and right-hand fields, accompanied by a secondary dragon vignette at the right margin. A repeating microtext guilloche band reading BANQUE DE L'INDO-CHINE borders the upper portion, and a cautionary anti-counterfeiting legend in French occupies a panel at the lower centre, with the designer credit Geo. Duval. fec. at bottom left.
