The Banco Comercial de Santa Fé operated in Argentina's Santa Fe province during a period when provincial banks held the effective right to issue currency — a situation that persisted until federal monetary consolidation gradually eliminated competing issuers through the 1880s and 1890s. This note predates that reckoning by two decades.
ABNC produced the plate in New York, as was routine for Argentine provincial issuers who lacked domestic printing infrastructure capable of the intaglio work required to deter counterfeiting. The denomination in pesos plata boliviana reflects a regional unit of account still common in the Río de la Plata interior at the time, distinct from the peso fuerte used in Buenos Aires.
