Opmerkingen

The Banco de España branches briefly became autonomous issuers during the opening months of the Civil War, before the Republican government consolidated control over currency policy. Santander's branch issued this 5 Pesetas in 1936 under that improvised local authority — a practical measure rather than a planned monetary act, reflecting how quickly the institutional framework fractured after July 1936.

Santander fell to Nationalist forces in August 1937. Notes from this branch had a circulation window of roughly a year, and surviving examples often show the wear consistent with heavy local use in a city under wartime conditions.
