The Palestine Currency Board operated as a currency authority rather than a central bank — it issued no credit, held pound sterling reserves at a strict 1:1 ratio, and had no monetary policy function whatsoever. Bronze replaced the earlier cupro-nickel composition for this denomination specifically because wartime demand stripped British and Commonwealth mints of strategic metals, pushing the Royal Mint to reformulate lower-denomination coinage across multiple territories simultaneously. The 1942–1944 dating covers a period when Palestine was functioning as a major Allied logistics hub, meaning these coins circulated hard through military canteens and civilian markets alike.
