| Obverse description | Brown and blue Notgeld on cream paper within a scalloped outer border, arranged in a tripartite layout: flanking panels each carry the denomination cypher '5 M' in rust-red script within blue-accented cartouches, the left panel bearing a Gothic-script payment instruction and account field ('Konto C'), the right stating the payable sum. The central vignette presents the crowned heraldic arms of Cologne — a blue shield with black cross and six crowned heads, helmeted crest with mantling — set against a brown ground, with a scrolled banner above reading 'Die städt. Sparkasse Brühl bei Köln' and a lower cartouche naming the drawee as 'Kreissparkasse Köln'. The redemption deadline 'Dieser Scheck muß bis 1. Oktober 1922 eingelöst sein' and the printer imprint 'FLEMMING-WISKOTT-A.-G.-GLOGAU' appear in the lower margin. |

The left panel, enclosed in a blue-ruled inner frame, presents a full-length figure of a male worker in shirtsleeves holding a tool, standing on rocky ground in allusion to local lignite mining; a lower caption identifies the operation as 'Roddergrube A.G. Brühl'. The dominant right-hand panel renders in fine line engraving an open-cast mine with a steep spoil heap, rail conveyors, and industrial buildings with smokestacks, accompanied by the patriotic verse 'Die Zeit ist hart, das Vaterland in Not, / Nur Kohle rettet, Kohle nur schafft Brot.' and the registration number 'D.R.G.M. 795679.' in the lower margin. |
